Women

The Salvation Army recognizes the importance of the role of women in society and has implemented programs to provide guidance and fulfillment through structured activities.

In our shelters for homeless families, the mother is often the only parent in the household. These women are given support through life-skill programs, recreation and educational assistance. At our Assessment Shelter for Women in Jamaica, Queens, women are bolstered in their struggle to escape homelessness and abusive situations.

For many years, the keystone of women's programs in The Salvation Army has been the Home League, represented in each of our 45 corps community centers. The Home League brings together women each week for worship, recreation, community service, field trips and other activities. A few times a year, women from the Home League gather for special rallies and retreats.

Another component of the Army's services for women is our Residential Program. In New York City, there are three residences for working women, providing safety and security at a reasonable cost.
