Adult Rehabilitation Centers

Adult Rehabilitation Centers serve the social, emotional and spiritual needs of men and (at some sites) women coping with alcohol, drug and other addictions. The centers provide adequate housing along with work, group and individual therapy in clean, wholesome surroundings. The Adult Rehabilitation Centers are responsible for the collection of used clothing, furniture and other household items and the operation of our thrift stores.

The Salvation Army's present Adult Rehabilitation Center System had its genesis in the 1890s in New York City with the "Cheap Food and Shelter Depot," which later became The Industrial Home Department. The first Industrial Home was established in 1906 on West 48th Street, the site of the present Manhattan Adult Rehabilitation Center.

The Manhattan ARC, the largest facility of its kind in the Eastern Territory, serves more than 100 clients, male and female, with a staff of 108 employees, 15 trucks and 10 stores.

Other Adult Rehabilitation Centers operating in the Greater New York Division are located in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Hempstead, Mount Vernon and Poughkeepsie.

Headquarters for the Adult Rehabilitation Centers Command are located at The Salvation Army's Eastern Territorial Headquarters in West Nyack, NY (914) 732-9700.
