Marital Counseling

With divorce, separation and spousal abuse contributing to the breakdown of marriages and families, The Salvation Army in Greater New York has established programs to fortify and enrich the marriage relationship.

Many of our programs are prevention oriented, beginning with pre-marital counseling provided by Salvation Army officers (who are ordained ministers) and/or community service workers at 38 locations throughout the Greater New York area. In addition, some locations conduct workshops to assist engaged or married couples in basic life skills such as budget management and the prevention of domestic violence. Some of our corps community centers offer Bible studies for married couples.

Crisis intervention for marriages in jeopardy is another key component of The Salvation Army's marital counseling program. Trained counselors assess the situation and provide a constructive plan to repair the damaged relationship. When necessary, a counselor may refer the couple to a more highly trained individual.

The Salvation Army believes the marriage relationship is a holy union, blessed by God. In keeping with that belief, counseling has a Scriptural basis.
