Background
For those individuals who have demonstrated enough progress and outgrown a homeless shelter, East 119th Street is an ideal housing opportunity. A safe and secure environment, community atmosphere, on-site work and health care assistance, recreational activities and links to other nearby Salvation Army programs all contribute to the type of supportive environment necessary to help veterans continue overcoming issues related to their experience. The facility also offers services designed to confront drug abuse and mental illness. A caring and compassionate staff assist the residents in setting, achieving and maintaining personal goals in the areas of health, employment, housing and spiritual matters. On-Site
Services Each resident is provided a private room with a sink and refrigerator. Kitchens, lounge areas, lavatories and showers are shared among four individual units. In addition, the facility has a cafeteria and a library Eligibility is based upon service in the Armed Forces and referral from a city or affiliated shelter. A NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS) 1995 Housing referral and other supporting documents submitted must accompany the referral via the DHS Shelter Placement Unit. To meet the needs of this heavily “at-risk” population, The Salvation Army has established the Kingsboro Men’s MICA Shelter in Flatbush Brooklyn. They are committed to providing comprehensive holistic services to homeless men who are classified as mentally ill chemical abusers (MICA). The Modified TC
Approach Kingsboro is a model program, working closely with the Center for Therapeutic Community Research of the National Development Research Institute to treat individuals with multiple disabilities who have not been able to take care of themselves and function independently. Developed in cooperation with the New York City Department of Homeless Services, Kingsboro is The Salvation army’s first modified therapeutic community exclusively for homeless mentally ill chemical abusers. It is a transitional program with an anticipated six-month stay. The goal of the Program is to assist residents in moving from the homeless shelter system to other service systems that provide more structure and stability while providing the necessary clinical and supportive services. In addition to providing necessities, Kingsboro provides a wide range of services that will one day, lead to recovery, a productive lifestyle and independent living. leisure skills The Salvation Army staff provides on-site clinical and case management services. Brookdale University Medical Center provides psychiatric, medical, nursing, social, substance abuse and case management services at the shelter. By providing a full range of services at the shelter, a continuum of care is ensured, enabling residents to have their social and psychological needs met and develop the skills to successfully advance to a higher level of living.
