Background The WEP
is
specifically designed to place adults receiving public assistance benefits
(Temporary Assistance for Needy Families [TANF] and Safety Net for Single
Adults [SN]) in actual work situations at the
Salvation Army’s various sites, facilities and centers throughout
the five boroughs where they can use their (acquired) skills to meet
organizational needs. WEP
participants attend job readiness workshops to prepare for referral
and placement in the workforce. Unlike other WEP programs, this allows The Salvation Army to adopt a comprehensive approach when dispensing services to program participants and guarantees a higher rate of success for people moving from a life of dependence to independence. Future PlansOur
desire is to expand WEP and compliment it with other related employment
programs and services. We would also use the WEP program as the conduit
to forming a venture between Ernst and Young and the Staples Corp. The
objective is to identify WEP participants for Work Opportunity Tax Credits
(WOTC) for Staples to hire as Associates from various Salvation Army
work-sites and/or programs. If successful, this could easily serve as
models for other Salvation Army territorities to emulate for placing
economically disadvantaged individuals. TOP
Background"They assured your future, now assure theirs" Located
at the Borden Avenue Veterans Residence in Long Island
City, Queens, the Homeless Veterans
Reintegration Project (HVRP) is structured to provide veterans with
job opportunities, work readiness preparation and assistance with meeting
educational goals and vocational training.
The program philosophy is, “Give a veteran food and he can eat
for a day, but give him a job and he will eat for the rest of his life.” HVRP
works closely with Americorp.
This Program pays for the education of BAVR veterans, and in
return they volunteer their services in local communities.
HVRP offers Security Training and works closely with department
of Labor for other career training courses to make our veterans more
marketable. HVRP
conducts monthly workshops with topics such as: Time Management, Interviewing
Skills, Dressing for Success, Conflict Resolution and all the essential
qualities that are needed to not only get the job, but to keep it. TOP
