Group Homes For Adolescents

The Salvation Army's Group Home Program has been in operation since 1973, providing homes for adolescent boys and girls who have been referred by the court system. These young people are among the most difficult in the foster care system. In many cases, they have been so traumatized that they even lack the basic socialization skills to attend school.

The Salvation Army operates eight group homes in New York City. We make every attempt to make the setting as homelike as possible. School and vocational training are priorities, and the Board of Education provides tutoring. In addition, the Army provides Independent Living Skills seminars and workshops, opportunity for outpatient counseling, arts and crafts and many recreational activities and trips. At one of our homes, we have even included a commercial kitchen and cooking classes.

Group homes reflect a team approach to create a nurturing culture of acceptance. We encourage our youth to visit with their families when possible. Ancillary services include a medical component and Salvation Army chaplains.
