Through its Social Services for Children, The Salvation Army has been providing services for persons with mental retardation and developmental disabilities for 20 years. Presently, the Greater New York Division operates four residences, a residence in the Bronx and a facility for medically frail, non-ambulatory individuals in Queens. Residential habilitation training includes daily living activities, independent living skills and cognitive habilitation. Nursing, social work services, medical, dental, occupational and physical therapy are all provided by vendor agencies and local hospitals. All residences are staffed by trained administrators, program coordinators and counselors. In addition, Salvation Army chaplains visit a residence each month to lead simple religious services. The State of New York Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Services certify these residences through annual and semi-annual audits.
