Children and Youth

Children are our future, and the Salvation Army has many programs to give our youth every opportunity to succeed.

Many of our 45 corps community centers offer after-school programs, which serve to channel children's energy into constructive activities that foster physical, psychological and spiritual growth. Organized sports, computer and music training and tutoring all play roles in the developmental process.

At our Brooklyn Brownsville Corps and Harlem Temple Corps, children benefit from GAINS (Greater Academic Incentives to Nurture Success). The Harlem GAINS program has received assistance from the National Basketball Association. At Brownsville, a special mentoring program has given teenagers the opportunity to train with top professionals.

During the summer months, several corps operate day camps.

The spiritual development of youngsters is bolstered by Sunday School and scouting-type programs such as Sunbeams Girls (6-11), Girl Guards (12-18) and Adventure Corps for boys of all ages.
