Volunteer
Share your skills
From teaching music lessons to at-risk youth, to dishing up meals in soup kitchens, volunteers are a crucial part of The Salvation Army of Greater New York’s more than 140 community service programs.
Volunteers tutor, cook, clean, teach, mentor, supervise children at play, coach, provide companionship for seniors, help with holiday baskets, serve on advisory boards, roll up their sleeves in times of disasters, ring the bells during The Red Kettle effort, and much more.
If you have a special skill or passion—whether it is a knack for playing the piano or an affinity for data entry—that you would like to share, or if you simply want to help others but aren’t sure how, we have a job that is right for you.
One wonderful way to begin your journey as a volunteer is to become one of the hundreds of bell ringers that man the Salvation Army red kettles throughout the city.
Ring that bell!
A relatively short time commitment and flexible hours make bell-ringing ideal for volunteers with tight schedules and families who want to share the kettle experience. Children love the hands on activity (and making a joyful noise!) and it’s the perfect way for parents to teach their children about giving during the holiday season.
Most importantly, bell ringers help the Army gather more than $2,000,000, which in turn allows us to serve more than 300,000 meals to the hungry and distribute 100,000 gifts to needy children during the holiday season.
